About Shrutindandan

Indian Classical Vocal Music is the root of all kinds of Indian music, vocal and instrumental alike, just as the human voice is woven into the heart of the matrix of human feelings. Music woven with the seven basic notes transcends barriers of time and space. Just as sportsmen benefit from starting early, vocalists benefit from exercising their minds and their voice from an early age. Thus Shrutinandan – with its distinctive, original focus on training children – is an important resource in the musical training of your child.

Shrutinandan trains its students in universal techniques and principles and is not affiliated to any gharana or schools of music. Our students go on to join Gurus in different schools.

Did you Know?

Shrutinandan comes from two Sanskrit words: ‘Shruti’ is the ancient Indian tradition of learning through listening, and ‘Nandan’ can mean ‘beautiful’ or ‘children’.

Shrutinandan is steeped in classical Indian traditions, including, importantly, the guru-shishya (teacher-student) tradition that encourages individual mentoring and close interaction between teacher and student. However, in a happy mix of age-old tradition and the latest scientific and technological advances, we embrace modern scientific advances – especially those in sound recording and reproduction that are vital for vocalists. Shrutinandan trains its students to take advantage of technology, as well as recognize its limitations.

Our Staff

Shrutinandan was founded by noted vocalist Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty as a institute that would fulfil his dream of taking classical musical education to the young. His inputs and unique teaching methods play a key role in making Shrutinandan reknowned as a premier institute for budding vocalists.

Our 32-strong teaching staff is led by the Principal, Smt. Chandana Chakrabarty, an expert musician in her own right. A distinction holder in both B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. in Music; she has been described as a motherly and conscientious music teacher of children. She pioneered – with singular success – the unique method of music teaching evolved and perfected by Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty.

Continuing Education for Teachers

Shrutinandan believes that a musical education never stops, and this is as valid for its teachers and instructors as it is for its students. Teachers receive instruction from our founder, Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, as well as eminent musicians like Anindo Chatterjee.

Infrastructure

Shrutinandan’s premises in Tollygunge, Calcutta consists of the Hindustan Lever Sangeet Sangha, which is a modern building equipped with every convenience necessary to teach music efficiently. Its six floors include a cafeteria, conference rooms, halls for public performance, and rooms for international students and guest artistes. Space has been set aside for a basement studio.

All classrooms are air-conditioned and provided with facilities for recording music lessons. All the classrooms are fitted with closed-circuit TV and two-way radio; teachers monitor practice sessions for uninterrupted teaching and learning.
