Pandit  
 

Pandit means scholar. In the field of music Pandit is a very respectable title not given by any institution or any individual or the Government. When it is a unanimous statement made by almost all the listeners to call a performer as an outstanding master musician then only such performing musician is respectably addressed as Pandit. Lately the Government of India has started announcing all the Top-grade Radio artistes as Pandit. Sometimes some artistes themselves starts writing Pandit before their names in the hope of earning fame resulting that common listeners get confused about the respectability of the title “Pandit.”

Parampara  
 

Parampara means tradition which comes from the grand father or father or Guru and transmitted to their grand son/daughter, son/daughter or “shishyas” (devoted students). Music in general and Indian Raga music in particular has always got success by way of this “training through Parampara’ (Paramparagata sikshya/training). It is a very sacred relationship of love and affection between the Master and the pupil through which all the knowledge of Guru is transmitted to the next generation.
