Training Course and Syllabus

The curriculum at Shrutinandan is divided into four different levels or grades. The duration of each grade depends upon the progress of the student: an expert committee grades students and decides when a student should be promoted to the next grade. The grades are:

  • Ārohee
  • Sthāyee
  • Antarā
  • Sanchāri

Certificates attesting to the students' status as a performer are given only after completing the Sanchāri grade. A certificate may be given to a student completing grade Antarā if it is necessary that the student terminate the course due to unavoidable circumstances and if the student's record is satisfactory.

Progress reports are given for grades prior to Antarā, however they cannot be considered as a certificate of merit.

Awards

Four very special medals with citations will be conferred on the students who excel in the examinations that are held after the completion of the entire course:

  • The Bade Ghulām Ali Khān Medal for exceptional excellence in Classical Vocal performance (Dhrupad, Khayāl, etc)
  • The Munwar Ali Khān Medal for exceptional excellence in Semi-classical Vocal performance (Thumri, Dādrā, Kajri, Chaitee, etc)
  • The Kānāi Dās Bairāgi Medal for exceptional excellence in the performance of vocal music (Geet, Ghazal, Bhajan, Modern Bengali Music, etc)
  • The Jnān Prakāsh Ghosh Medal for all round excellence in all forms of music, especially vocal music.

Things to Remember

  • Shrutinandan requires a dress code from its students: traditional Indian dress is required; kurta and pyjama for boys and salwar-kameez for girls.
  • Students will be required to learn Hindi and/or Bengali so that they may be able to read and perform songs in those languages whenever required.
  • Shrutinandan does not permit its students to learn from any other music teacher while they are on Shrutinandan's rolls. Arranging for Harmonium or Tabla accompanists for the student at home requires prior permission from the staff.
  • Students will be required to attend musical programs selected by Shrutinandan.
  • Students may appear on Radio or Television, or in school/college events, without permission. Permission, however, is required for any other concerts.
  • The pitch of students’ instruments shall be standardized at the start of the course, and students are expected to retain the standardized instrument for practice sessions away from the institute.
  • A complete list of regulations appears in the prospectus.
