Ajit Kumar Chakrabarty, his father, was
his first guru.
Subsequently he received training from
Late Pannalal Samanta and Late Kanaidas
Bairagi and Dr. Amiyaranjan Bandopadhyay
Then he went under the tutelage of guru
Jnan Prakash Ghosh, a legendary, versatile,
an institutional figure by all means and
one of the all time great gurus
ever born.
Ustad Munwar Ali Khan, son and successor
of great Ustad Bade Ghula Ali Khan, gave
him advanced training of Patiala Kasoor
gharana.
Although he received specialized training
in the Patiala Kasur gharana or
style and did research on Ustad Bade Ghulam
Ali Khan's style of singing, he was blessed
to have close association with so many great
musicians of various other gharanas
as well, like Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan
(Agra), Pandit Nivruttibua Sarnaik (Alladiya
Jaypur) Smt Hirabai Barodekar (Kirana) at
the ITC Sangeet Research Academy where he
is still associated as the senior guru.
While pursuing his studies at Rabindrabharati
University, Kolkata, he received training
from Sri Chinmoy Lahiri, Dhirendra Chandra
Mitra, Suchitra Mitra, Sumitra Sen, Nirmalendu
Chowdhury, Paresh Deb, Prativa Kapoor, Panchanan
Bhattacharya and Chabi Bandyopadhyay, all
exponents in their respective genre of music.
In course of this journey, Pandit Chakrabarty
has grown with the treasured insight and
vision intermingled with his academic virtues
leading him to realize that a true musician
should not cripple him in the shackles of
a gharana limits. He should embellish
his presentations with the distinctive gems
from different gharanas.
